Florall fair was a festival

The Flemish floriculture trade fair Florall can look back on a successful and festive edition with many attendees. To mark 30 years of Belgian trade fair, the Florall board made special efforts to pamper both visitors and exhibitors. Chairman Dries Verstraete emphasized the significant changes in the fair’s approach over the past three decades. “In the past, the fair was primarily a platform to show the product range for the coming season and to secure orders. Today, the focus is on personal connections, something that databases and online communication simply cannot replicate."

Pearl of the Awards

On the occasion of this anniversary, Hydrangea paniculata 'Bobo' from Best Select was selected from all previously awarded cultivars as the 'Pearl of the Awards'. Awarded Gold in August 2010, Bobo has fulfilled its potential as an award-winning novelty. Hundreds of thousands of Bobos are now sold worldwide every year, with over six million sold since its launch. Kristiaan Van Laecke (ILVO) and Lucas De Nolf (President Best Select) received the trophy during the closing event.

Florall awards

The jury was very positive about the concept 'Ghent Azalea Young Stars' by Geert and Marijke De Waele - Reynvoet. In this campaign, young girls personify each cultivar in their range of Ghent Azaleas, emphasizing natural beauty by choosing Flemish girls rather than professional models. At the same time this approach also draws attention to the Ghent azalea's recognition as the first non-edible regional product by the EU in 2010.

The jury also evaluated 14 new cultivars. Gold went to Leycesteria formosa 'Little lanterns' by Willy De Nolf. Silver went to Heptacodium miconioides 'Temple of Bloom', another entry by Willy De Nolf. Bronze went to Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Yellow teddy Bear' from Boomkwekerij Schrauwen-Moerings (a submission from GrootGroenPlus).
